Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has denied reports that President William Ruto’s Sh1 million donation was coldly received at a Nyeri church on Sunday, 9th February, 2025.
According to a report in the Daily Nation newspaper on Monday, 10th February, 2025, Ruto’s contribution was received with less excitement, with only a handful of congregants at Victors Chapel clapping and applauding the donation.
However, the angered MP on Monday denied the report, saying that the newspaper was biased in its coverage.
The MP attached a video on his social media pages showing him presenting the contribution to the church’s leader, Bishop William Githinji.
“Nation and NTV Kenya, please get your facts right before writing fake stories. Employ qualified journalists in Karatina who will report responsibly. The one you have is cheap and asks for Sh2,000 to do a story. Below is how the President’s gift was received,” remarked Wamumbi.
However, the MP limited the number of people who could comment on the video.
President Ruto failed to attend the church to join its Silver Jubilee Celebration as it was earlier expected.
Explaining Ruto’s absence, the MP said that he was attending an urgent East African Community (EAC) head of states meeting in Dare es Salaam, Tanzania, to address the ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC.
“His Excellency President William Ruto was to attend this service but there is a lot going on in the DRC Congo. However, he called an urgent meeting in Dar es Salaam in his capacity as the EAC heads of states chairperson to discuss the crisis. He came on Friday and flew out the same day. That’s why he couldn’t make it to this celebration,” said Wamumbi.
However, intelligence reports indicated that the President would receive cold reception in the area, thus avoiding attending the service.
