Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has rolled out one of the most expansive education support packages seen in the constituency, announcing a sharp reduction in school fees for all day secondary schools alongside a raft of welfare, infrastructure and performance incentives aimed at lifting learning outcomes.
Speaking on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Maragi Primary School grounds during the launch of the Kiharu Masomo Bora Programme for 2026, Nyoro said fees for day secondary school learners have been cut by half—from Sh1,000 to just Sh500 per term—effective immediately from the first term of 2026.
Fees slashed as Masomo Bora expands
The programme will benefit more than 12,000 learners across all 65 day secondary schools in Kiharu Constituency, covering Grade 10, Form Three and Form Four students. Nyoro said the decision to lower fees was informed by the rising cost of living and the need to keep children in school at a critical stage of their education.
Under the new arrangement, no learner in a day secondary school will pay more than Sh500 per term, and schools have been barred from charging any additional levies, registration fees or hidden costs of any kind.

Remedial programmes, often blamed for pushing up the cost of schooling, have also been capped at Sh1,000 per term.
Nyoro stressed that the programme applies to all learners regardless of where they come from, as long as they are enrolled in a public day secondary school within Kiharu. “Education support must be fair, predictable and inclusive,” he said.
Meals, uniforms and learning materials boost
Beyond fees, the Masomo Bora Programme places heavy emphasis on student welfare. All learners will be provided with lunch every school day, including Saturdays. The menu includes githeri three days a week, rice on the remaining three days, and uji during tea breaks. To sweeten the deal, chapati will be served for lunch on the last Friday of every month.
To support learning, Kiharu NG-CDF has set aside an additional Sh10 million this financial year for revision materials, on top of Sh20 million already invested in previous years. Nyoro noted that access to quality learning materials has been a key driver of improved performance in the constituency.

Infrastructure development also features prominently, with more than Sh50 million earmarked for additional facilities, particularly science laboratories. The MP said sustained investment in infrastructure since the programme’s inception has helped decongest schools and improve practical learning.
Students joining Grade 10 in 20 identified schools with low enrolment, as well as newly established schools, will receive uniforms free of charge—a move aimed at boosting transition and retention rates.
Incentives for schools, teachers and principals
Recognising the role of co-curricular activities in holistic education, each of the 65 day secondary schools will receive an extra Sh50,000 to supplement activity funds for music festivals, games and other events, amid concerns that government capitation is insufficient.
A total of Sh900,000 has also been allocated for prize-giving ceremonies—Sh450,000 for each of the two sub-counties, Murang’a East and Kahuro—to reward top-performing students without burdening parents.
Teachers and school heads have not been left out. The best-improved teacher per subject in each sub-county will earn a fully paid trip to Mombasa, funded personally by the MP.

Principals from the best and most improved schools in each of Kiharu’s six wards—12 in total—will receive all-expenses-paid trips to Dubai, with those who have previously travelled there given the option of visiting Malaysia instead.
Additionally, insurance premiums and servicing costs for buses owned by day secondary schools will be covered under the programme, easing operational pressure on institutions.
Nyoro said the Masomo Bora initiative reflects a long-term commitment to making quality education affordable, dignified and results-driven in Kiharu, adding that the constituency will continue to invest in learners as its most valuable resource.
