Ndindi: How I helped Gachagua win Ol Kalou by election

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has revealed how he stepped in to help Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua secure victory in the hotly contested Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election held on July 16, 2026.

Speaking on Sunday, August 23, during an interview with Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi (The Flame) political show, Nyoro, who also leads the Peoples Party of Kenya (PPK), said Gachagua personally sought his assistance after political temperatures escalated in the constituency, based in Nyandarua County.

The by-election ended in a landslide victory for Gachagua’s DCP, with its candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru (Ngotho) securing 35,440 votes.

His closest rival, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, garnered 5,450 votes.

Nyoro said his intervention was motivated by his friendship with Gachagua and his belief that a DCP victory would send a political message to President William Ruto.

Nyoro says he offered financial support

“We speak with Gachagua. To the best of my knowledge, we are friends. Any time he needs my assistance, I usually answer his calls. Even before this decision [joining the PPK], I consulted him. We sat down for many hours,” Nyoro said.

He explained that consultations between political leaders did not necessarily mean they would agree on every political decision but reflected mutual respect.

“Consulting does not mean you will agree on decisions you are going to make; but it’s about mutual respect,” he said.

Nyoro disclosed that Gachagua contacted him as the Ol Kalou contest intensified, informing him that the political situation was difficult and seeking his assistance.

“There was a political war in Ol Kalou. In my heart, I knew that it was a must for us to win the by-election to send a message to William Ruto. Even that time we spoke. He told me that things were tough there…and sought for my assistance. I did what I did. I assisted [them] with money,” Nyoro said.

Nyoro’s revelation comes amid claims that his PPK is closely associated with President Ruto, allegations he has dismissed.
