Jamleck Kamau withdraws from Murang’a ’27 governor race

Former Kigumo MP and ex-Cabinet Minister Jamleck Kamau has announced that he will not contest the Murang’a gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, bringing to an end months of speculation over his political future.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Kamau said the decision was reached after “deep reflection, consultation, and prayers,” adding that he had chosen to pursue a different path in serving the country.

His announcement comes barely a week after Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata defected from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to the Rigathi Gachagua-led Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), a move that significantly reshaped the county’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. Although Kamau did not directly link his decision to the latest political realignments, the timing of his announcement is expected to fuel fresh debate over succession politics in Murang’a.

Shift in focus

“I wish to formally announce that I will not be vying for the position of Governor of Murang’a County,” Kamau said.

He explained that leadership was not solely about seeking elective office but rather about serving the people in different capacities.

“This decision has been made with a clear conscience and a firm conviction that leadership is ultimately about serving the people, not merely seeking elective office. My commitment to the people of Murang’a and to Kenya remains unwavering,” he stated.

Instead of pursuing the county’s top seat, Kamau said he would channel his efforts towards supporting The United Alternative Government, which he described as a movement committed to building “a united, just, accountable, and prosperous Kenya.”

He urged his supporters across Murang’a County and the country to respect his decision and continue working alongside him in advancing what he termed a greater national cause.

“I therefore humbly ask all my supporters, friends, and well-wishers to embrace this decision and continue standing with me as we pursue a greater cause for renewal of our nation. Let us put Kenya first, rise above personal interests, and work together to leave a better country for future generations,” he said.

Kamau thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout his political career, saying their encouragement had remained a source of strength.

“The mission continues, and together, we shall not only build a stronger Murang’a, but a better Kenya for all of us,” he added.

Unsuccessful bids

It remains unclear what informed Kamau’s latest decision, especially considering that he had previously mounted determined campaigns to capture the county’s top seat.

Kamau officially launched his first gubernatorial bid in August 2016 before contesting the 2017 General Election, where he lost to then Governor Mwangi wa Iria. He made another attempt in the August 9, 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket but was defeated by Kang’ata.

His latest announcement also follows another surprise declaration made in January this year, when he revealed that he was stepping away from active politics, raising questions over whether he would seek any elective position in the future.
