Kenya’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes took another major hit after the Harambee Stars suffered a 3-1 defeat to The Gambia in a Group F match played Friday evening at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The result leaves Kenya’s chances of progressing to the global showpiece in serious doubt, with Gabon’s 4-0 win over Seychelles on Thursday further widening the gap. The Harambee Stars remain stuck on six points after six games, while Gabon tops the group with 18 points and a superior head-to-head record, making automatic qualification mathematically impossible.
The match began brightly for Kenya, who showed attacking intent in the opening minutes. Emmanuel Osoro and William Lenkupae combined well to create an early chance, while captain Michael Olunga twice came close—first from a Timothy Ouma corner and later with a powerful header that forced a save from the Gambian goalkeeper. But despite the early pressure, Kenya failed to capitalize, leaving themselves vulnerable at the back.
Gambia dominate first half
The visitors struck first in the 11th minute when Sheriff Sinyan rose highest to head in Yankuba Minteh’s corner, silencing the Kasarani crowd. Brighton winger Minteh doubled Gambia’s advantage in the 26th minute with a clinical finish before Musa Barrow extended the lead, making it 3-0 before halftime.

Kenya’s defence looked unsettled throughout the opening half, struggling to contain Minteh and Barrow, whose pace and movement repeatedly tore through the backline. At the break, Gambia had taken full control of the contest, leaving the Stars staring at another painful defeat in their qualifying campaign.
Kenya fight back but fall short
Coach Benni McCarthy made changes after the interval, introducing Richard Odada and Manzur Okwaro to inject energy. Kenya pressed forward with more urgency, with Alpha Onyango forcing a corner early in the second half and Olunga spurning a golden chance in the 47th minute. Frustration mounted when defender Sylvester Owino was booked for a reckless tackle in the 54th minute, underlining Kenya’s desperation to regain control.

Teenager Ryan Wesley Ogam came on as a substitute for Osoro and provided the breakthrough in the 81st minute, scoring Kenya’s only goal of the night. Olunga nearly added a second moments later, but the Gambian defence stood firm. Substitute Boniface Muchiri brought pace on the wings, yet the West Africans managed the closing stages with composure, ensuring Kenya could not mount a full comeback.
After six minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed Gambia’s 3-1 victory, a result that effectively ended Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The Harambee Stars now face an uphill task to finish strongly in the remaining fixtures, with fans calling for renewed focus as the team looks ahead to future tournaments.
