Leshau Pondo Member of County Assembly (MCA) Gathungu Kamau has cautioned residents over a surge in fraudsters impersonating him to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.
The scammers, he said, are taking advantage of desperate job seekers by promising them employment opportunities in exchange for cash.
The warning follows a recent incident in which a local resident lost Sh3,200 to an individual who falsely claimed to be the MCA.
The conman allegedly assured the victim that he could secure a job for her son within the Nyandarua County Government.
Conman exploits job desperation
In an audio recording that has since circulated widely on social media, the impersonator is heard instructing the victim to send Sh3,200 to facilitate the job placement.

“I would help your son to get a job at the Nyandarua County Government. You need to send Sh3,200,” the conman is heard saying.

Authorities have identified the phone number used in the scam as 0787 587 106, which is now under investigation.
MCA distances himself from fraud
Speaking exclusively to Newsflash, Gathungu distanced himself from the fraudulent activities and urged residents to remain vigilant.
He emphasized that he does not solicit money from constituents in exchange for jobs or any form of assistance.
“We have already forwarded the number to the National Intelligence Service (NIS), and we are awaiting appropriate action,” he said.
The MCA further noted that many residents already have his official contact, which remains the only legitimate channel through which he communicates. He encouraged anyone in doubt to verify information directly with him before taking any action.
Gathungu, a two-term MCA and a contender for the Ndaragwa parliamentary seat in 2027, reiterated his commitment to protecting residents from exploitation and ensuring accountability.
