The Kenyan media fraternity is in mourning following the death of celebrated radio broadcaster, Amina Fakii, who passed away on Sunday, December 21.
Fakii, who worked for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in her heydays, died at the age of 83.
She was laid to rest on Monday evening in Nairobi in accordance with Islamic rites.
Widely regarded as one of the most recognisable voices on national radio, Fakii enjoyed a long and distinguished career at KBC, formerly known as the Voice of Kenya (VoK). Her rich, distinctive voice, captivating on-air style and deep sense of public duty endeared her to listeners across generations.
Throughout her career, Fakii was admired for her professionalism, credibility and commitment to serving the public. Her contribution left an enduring mark on Kenya’s media landscape, earning her widespread respect from colleagues, industry players and loyal audiences nationwide.
Tributes pour in for a radio icon
Following the announcement of her death, Kenyans took to social media to share heartfelt tributes, remembering a broadcaster whose voice became synonymous with trust, authority and excellence on the airwaves.
Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho was among national leaders who mourned her passing, describing Fakii as a legendary figure whose impact on the media industry was profound.
“It is with deep sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the legendary KBC radio presenter Amina Fakii following the sad news of her passing,” Joho said in a statement.

He lauded her dedication and professionalism, noting that she served the public with integrity and left behind an enduring legacy.
“Mama Amina Fakii made an invaluable contribution to the media industry and served the public with dedication, professionalism and integrity. She has left behind a legacy that will be remembered with respect and admiration,” he added.
Joho also offered prayers for her family and loved ones, asking for divine mercy upon her soul.
“May Allah grant her His boundless mercy, forgive her shortcomings and admit her into Jannatul Firdaus. May He also grant her family, loved ones and all those affected by this loss patience, strength and comfort during this difficult period,” he said.
Lasting legacy in Kenyan broadcasting
Like the late Leonard Mambo Mbotela, Fakii is remembered as one of the pioneers who helped shape Kenya’s radio culture, using the platform to inform, educate and serve the public with integrity and purpose.
Veteran broadcaster Fred Obachi Machoka paid tribute to her as both a mentor and a trailblazer. “Rest in perfect peace my friend and mentor, Mama Amina Fakir. A broadcast legend par excellence,” he said.
Former colleague Khadija Ali, who worked closely with Fakii, described her as a standard-setter in the newsroom.

“Amina was excellence without noise. She prepared thoroughly, spoke deliberately and never took the audience for granted. Working alongside her made you want to be better,” she said.
Veteran journalist Elizabeth Obege remembered Fakii as a pillar of professionalism and humility.
“She carried herself with dignity and humility. Amina understood the weight of the microphone. She reminded us that journalism is about responsibility, not ego,” Obege said.
