The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that 24 by-elections will be held on November 27, 2025, marking the end of months of unrepresented constituencies and wards across the country.
In a statement issued from its headquarters at Anniversary Towers, the commission outlined a detailed timetable for candidate nominations, registration, and dispute resolution ahead of the polls.
Nomination and registration requirements
The IEBC stated that nomination and registration of candidates — including those sponsored by political parties and independent aspirants — will take place on October 8 and 9, 2025.
Senatorial candidates will be required to present nomination forms accompanied by a minimum of 2,000 registered supporters. Those vying for Member of Parliament seats must submit at least 1,000 supporters, while candidates for Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats must secure 500 supporters.
The electoral body further directed that details of polling and tallying agents should be submitted at least 14 days before election day. This, it explained, will allow sufficient time for processing and training of agents.
Any disputes arising from the nomination exercise will be handled by the IEBC’s Dispute Resolution Committee between October 8 and October 17, 2025.
“All candidates and political parties are reminded that they are bound by the Electoral Code of Conduct from the date of the by-election notice until the swearing-in of elected leaders,” the commission emphasized.

Electoral units affected
The by-elections will cover a mix of Senate, National Assembly, and County Assembly seats left vacant due to various reasons, including nullification of results, resignations, and deaths.
The vacant Senate seat is in Baringo County. Six National Assembly constituencies will also head to the polls: Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja.
At the county assembly level, by-elections will be held in the following wards:
- Samburu County: Angata Nanyokie Ward
- Nandi County: Chemundu/Kapng’etuny Ward
- Tana River County: Chewani Ward
- Garissa County: Fafi Ward
- Nairobi City County: Kariobangi North Ward
- Kakamega County: Kisa East Ward
- Elgeyo Marakwet County: Metkei Ward
- Machakos County: Mumbuni North Ward
- Narok County: Narok Town Ward
- Kajiado County: Purko Ward

- Nyamira County: Nyansiongo, Nyamaiya, and Ekerenyo Wards
- Turkana County: Lake Zone and Nanaam Wards
- Bungoma County: Kabuchai/Chwele Ward
The IEBC noted that the upcoming by-elections are critical for restoring full representation to residents of the affected electoral units.

Adherence to electoral laws
The commission underscored the need for all political parties and independent candidates to conduct themselves within the framework of electoral laws, warning that violations of the Code of Conduct would attract sanctions.
“The Commission reiterates its commitment to free, fair, and credible by-elections. All stakeholders are urged to respect the electoral process to ensure smooth and peaceful polls,” the statement concluded.
