NBA steps up public awareness campaign on GMO regulation

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has stepped up public awareness campaigns aimed at improving understanding of its role in regulating genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Kenya.

The initiative seeks to address misinformation surrounding GMOs, promote science-based awareness, and strengthen public confidence in the country’s biosafety regulatory framework.

As part of the campaign, the Authority participated in the Wazee Premier League football tournament held over the weekend at the Eldoret Sports Club. The two-day event provided an opportunity for NBA officers to engage directly with youth, sports enthusiasts, and members of the local community through exhibitions and interactive sensitisation sessions.

The outreach focused on educating participants about the Authority’s mandate in regulating GMOs and the importance of biosafety measures in protecting public interests.

Combating misinformation on GMOs

Speaking during the event, Principal Planning Officer Emmanuel Kamboga, who represented Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Ann Karimi, said misconceptions and misinformation about GMOs have contributed to widespread misunderstanding of the Authority’s work.

“We are committed to ensuring that the public, particularly young people who are the country’s future leaders and decision-makers, understands the role of the National Biosafety Authority. An informed public is better placed to appreciate the importance of science-based regulation in safeguarding human health, animal health, and the environment,” said Mr Kamboga.

He emphasised that increasing public knowledge on biosafety is critical in enabling Kenyans to make informed decisions based on scientific evidence rather than misinformation.

The Authority noted that community outreach remains a key pillar of its public engagement strategy, with sports and other social events providing effective platforms for interacting with diverse audiences.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuous public education as part of efforts to ensure that the country’s biosafety decisions remain transparent, science-based, and focused on protecting human health, animal health, and the environment.
