The government has cautioned Kenyans against pursuing employment opportunities in Russia advertised through social media platforms and other unverified channels, warning that such offers have exposed many job seekers to fraud and exploitation.
This comes against the backdrop of reports of many Kenyans dying while fighting for the Russian army in the Russia–Ukraine war.
In an advisory issued on Sunday, February 15, 2026, the Kenyan Embassy in Moscow raised concern over a surge in cases involving Kenyans travelling to Russia after securing questionable job offers online. The statement was released through Roseline Njogu, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Diaspora Affairs in Kenya.
Authorities said the warning follows reports from affected individuals and families who have sought government intervention after encountering difficulties linked to deceptive recruitment schemes.
Surge in online job scams
According to the embassy, many Kenyans have been lured by promises of well-paying jobs circulated through social media, messaging applications, and informal agents. However, upon arrival in Russia, several job seekers reportedly discovered that the positions they had been promised either did not exist or differed significantly from what had been advertised.
In some instances, affected individuals allegedly had their travel documents confiscated or were subjected to restrictions that limited their freedom of movement.

Others were said to have been placed in challenging environments where access to assistance and communication with relatives or Kenyan authorities became difficult.
The embassy noted that individuals who travel through irregular recruitment arrangements often face complex legal and administrative hurdles that may delay or complicate efforts by the government to provide consular support. Officials stressed that intervention is sometimes constrained by the laws of the host country, making prevention the most effective safeguard.
Advisory to job seekers
The government has urged Kenyans seeking employment abroad to avoid engaging with recruiters operating through social media or unlicensed agencies. Instead, job seekers were advised to verify all employment offers through official government institutions, including relevant labour authorities and Kenyan diplomatic missions, before making travel arrangements.
The statement further warned against travelling on tourist visas for the purpose of seeking employment, noting that such practices expose individuals to legal consequences and heighten their vulnerability to exploitation.

Kenyans planning to work abroad were encouraged to confirm the legitimacy of job contracts and ensure that all travel documentation complies with legal requirements.
Additionally, citizens intending to travel to Russia or already residing there were encouraged to register with the Kenyan embassy to facilitate communication and access to assistance in case of emergencies.
The government also urged Kenyans living in or travelling to Belarus and Kazakhstan to remain vigilant and register with Kenyan diplomatic missions for easier communication and support.
Authorities noted that citizens in these neighbouring countries may face similar risks linked to unverified job offers and irregular migration channels, and encouraged them to comply with local laws and maintain regular contact with the embassy to facilitate assistance when necessary.
Call for vigilance and compliance
The embassy emphasised that those who disregard official verification procedures risk facing situations where government assistance may be limited. It urged the public to follow established migration guidelines and remain cautious when responding to employment advertisements circulated online.
Kenyan authorities indicated that they are collaborating with relevant agencies to address fraudulent recruitment networks targeting job seekers and to enhance awareness on safe migration practices.
